Just 31 kms from Sauðárkrókur is one of the most historic sites of Iceland. The Bishopric at Hólar was established in 1106 and continued for nearly seven centuries coming to an end around 1801. During this time it was considered the northern capital, the church was built in 1763 and is the oldest stone church in Iceland. Currently Hólar is the site of a university for Equine, Tourism and Aquaculture studies plus houses the Icelandic Horse Exhibition Centre.
